The Department of Building Safety Overview
The Department of Building Safety is responsible for the administration, enforcement and interpretation of the building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy conservation, and property maintenance codes adopted by Michigan. Our administrative assistants maintain the records of the Department of Building Safety and schedule the inspections required by the construction codes. The building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and housing inspectors conduct plan reviews and perform field inspections. The Building Official manages the day to day operations of the Department of Building Safety, including signing building permits, issuing Certificates of Use and Occupancy and investigating citizen complaints.

The Construction Board of Appeals
Michigan Law requires every governmental unit that enforces the State Construction Code to have a Construction Board of Appeals (CBA). Disagreements that cannot be resolved by the Building Official can be appealed to the Township CBA. The 5 members of the CBA rule on matters of interpretation, or alternative methods to comply with the code. The CBA lacks the legal authority to grant an exception of a code requirement. Please contact the Building Official for more information on filing an appeal.
