Building Overview
Building is responsible for the administration, enforcement and interpretation of the building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy conservation, and property maintenance codes adopted by Michigan. Our Administrative Assistants maintain the records for Building and schedule the inspections required by the construction codes. The Building, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical and Housing Inspectors conduct plan reviews and perform field inspections. The Building Official manages the day-to-day operations for Building, including signing building permits, issuing Certificates of Use and Occupancy and investigating citizen complaints.
Permits and Inspections
Building permits and inspections are required in the Township by the Michigan Building and Residential Codes for residential and non-residential buildings, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits. Some items that may not require a permit include, but are not limited to: fences six feet in height or less, new siding on a residential structure, replacement of same size windows, and replacement of roof shingles ONLY (no structural work).
The Construction Board of Appeals
Michigan Law requires every governmental unit that enforces the State Construction Code to have a Construction Board of Appeals (CBA). Disagreements that cannot be resolved by the Building Official can be appealed to the Township CBA. The four members of the CBA rule on matters of interpretation or alternative methods to comply with the code. The CBA lacks the legal authority to grant an exception of a code requirement. Please contact the Building Official for more information on filing an appeal.
